SOUL HEALING en ME/CVS - deel 2:

LEVEN MET ME / CVS

Mijn bloedsuiker ging fluctueren.
Mijn geheugen liet me in de steek.

Gevangen in mijn lichaam:

Soul Healing and ME/CFS - part 2:

A LIFE WITH ME

I believe this has been the blog that was most difficult for me to write so far, but how can I make you understand what soul healing has given me, without giving you a description of the situation I was in… the black hole I was in before I found a way out. I have been silent for a long time, hardly shared details with anyone, let nobody in, because every time somebody heard a part of it, I was facing so much criticism, so much negativity, so much unawareness and I received so many benign but for me painful advices and I took over so much pain from the other person. Their faces often were telling me: This girl has lost her mind, she doesn’t mesh completely….
If only they had known that I hadn’t lost my mind, but was trapped in a body which was failing on me more and more. I learned the hard way to keep my mouth shut, to act like everything was fine, to hide (to the extent that this was possible). However, I could let go of the masks whenever I was alone at home and that was the place where the real battle was taking place. All the incredible pain, inhuman suffering, the drama,  the inability to get to grips with the real issues, the anger, the powerlessness and so much more was kept hidden for most of the people. But I will give you a glimpse now on how it was during these years, so maybe you will understand that ME/CFS is not just being tired… not just affectation… not just enjoying social benefits. No, it is much more than that, however there are varying degrees. Below I will give you a glimpse of how it has been for me. I would not wish anyone to experience a life with ME….

How it all started:

It started in 1993 with swollen lymph nodes and the feeling of needle pricks under my ears. Headache, incredible headache each and every day and pain medication only made it worse.  Nausea, constant nausea, no matter how many liters of herbal tea I drank, and sooo tired… I didn’t feel like doing anything, it felt as if all the life force seeped away. Then in the blood test the Epstein-Barr Virus was found, so I officially was diagnosed with mononucleosis and was told it had to heal by itself.
Well… NO it didn’t heal by itself. I was transforming into a couch potato, and over time felt  more depressed because I was not capable of doing the things I loved to do.  My illness however didn’t heal at all, no matter how much rest I took. It only made me feel down and sad, because I used to be so active. I used to play sports 3 times a week, was part of a team playing matches, loved to be in nature, but was also very creative and was reading lots of books. I used to be one of the best students of my class and I missed studying so much….
Out of sheer misery I picked up some activities, because being at home for months doing nothing had not bring any physical improvement at all. But I was mentally and emotionally broken by doing nothing. So I needed to turn this situation around.

Intermediate:

I succeeded by the skin of one’s teeth to live a life as normal as possible. I went to university but didn’t attend all courses in each Trimester, so I needed more time to to graduate from Law school.  I lived in lodgings, so also needed to take care of housekeeping. Occasionally I went a night out, to keep in touch with friends and to have some fun, but it always felt like a part of me was missing, as if a part of me was no longer living. I ignored the headache, drank lots of herbal tea but it didn’t take the nausea away. I tried to live, like my doctor had told me to do, but…. the number of disease symptoms only increased instead of decreased, like I was hoping for.
When I graduated and started my job at the courthouse, I was hoping that it would get better, but unfortunately….
I was good at my job, was taking care of very difficult cases, but I was also very aware of the fact that I couldn’t enjoy my work in the way my co-workers did. It took my co-workers no effort at all, while I was completely exhausted at the end of the day and sometimes there was no energy left to cook diner.
My doctor had told me this disease would disappear by itself, as long as I would live and have fun. Really??
I thought it was time to seek for professional help. I visited someone trained in orthomolecular medicine and took many supplements during the day. Did it help me? Not really…. It kept me going, but I didn’t experience any improvement. So over the years I visited an acupuncturist, a homeopath. I tried bioresonance therapy, biophotonen therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, massage therapy, and so much more…. Not one of the treatments brought me permanent relief. Slowly I was going down until I entered the next stage.
The number of symptoms were increasing. My muscles got very stiff. I got more and more backpain, pain in my hips, my knees. I started to take the elevator instead of the stairs so I could save my energy.
I started to experience fluctuating blood sugar levels and needed to eat every few hours to prevent trembling and dizziness.
My memory let me down more and more. I was used to have an almost photographic memory and I could read many hours a day, but it was getting more difficult to concentrate en to absorb all the information from paperwork. I can tell you that it is not really convenient when you are working at the courthouse and need to process cases of 20 files each in short periods of time.
But I had a huge benefit which was really helpful, my spiritual channels. I received the information what was really important for me to read and what was less important because I would hear about that in court. In this way I was able to continue my work for some time. I was able to manage, even though I was in pain, had physical and mental challenges, many emotions of sadness and shame that I was not just like my co-workers, but I managed…. I was living on willpower. It took me a lot of effort, but I was living a kind of socially accepted life and was able to put on a mask and pretend that all was fine.

Breakpoint:

Until the moment in December 2003, the holiday season started. I had so much work waiting for me on my desk, because the workload was increasing. With fewer people we had to deal with more court cases and my body was on the brink of what it could handle.  During the Christmas holidays, when I finally took the necessary rest, my body collapsed and  I was in bed shivering with fever.
After another week at work the same thing happened in the weekend. When I woke up on January 13 to go to work again I could hardly get out of bed. I was quite cramped and stiff all over my body.
What was going on now? I never experienced that before. I dragged myself out of bed and into the bathroom, hoping a hot shower would help. But when I was finally dressed I realized it was totally crazy to drive to work in that condition. I was a danger on the road…. There was so much pressure in my head en my body reacted so slowly that I really couldn’t drive my car safely.
So I decided to call in sick, hoping that if I would rest for a week or so I would be fine again. To my great sorrow however, it was the first day of many years in bed and on the couch.

Trapped in my body:

Maybe you think right now that it was a pleasure to take some rest. In the beginning I indeed enjoyed it. I closed the doors, closed the curtains, and didn’t have to do anything. No more masks, no more putting a good face on it, no more copying behaviors of others, no more hiding of what I was feeling inside, no more pretending, but just giving in to the fact that this situation was no longer sustainable.
One week later however I started to feel bored and worried, because there was no improvement at all. My body was hurting so much, head to toe, and the pressure in my head was almost unbearable.
Nothing came out of the visits to my doctor. There was no indication of any abnormality in the blood tests my doctor did. And whoever I visited, no one seemed to be able to help me.
Then I had to visit the company doctor. She sent me to a psychologist. I was furious. This sickness wasn’t in my head, there was something really wrong with my body. I didn’t talk myself into this sickness. I was angry, sad, powerless, and so down because of this approach. This truly wasn’t a  psychosomatic disorder…. Who would talk herself into this kind of suffering? I was dreaming of traveling, being outside in nature, having children… not of lying down in bed all day.
Eventually they sent me to a psychiatrist and that man looked at me and said, you are furious and you have the right to be angry, but there is no indication that you are suffering of a mental illness, so I am sending you back to the company doctor. You need another kind of help.
Yes… he was so right, I really needed help, but where could I find the help I needed?

I visited many people, had many doctor examinations, and received many descriptions of many, many pills. There have been days that I took 48 pills… It costed me a fortune, and if it would only help me, I would have taken all these pills happily, but reality was that I even felt worse….  I eagerly grasped at straws, without any relief.

My symptoms were increasing even further. Nerve pain, incredible nerve pain. I could hardly move. It only took me 7 steps to walk from the couch to the washroom, but those 7 steps felt like running a marathon and it took me a long time to get there, often too much time to get to the toilet in time….
And if I finally was sitting on the toilet I was so exhausted and in so much pain, that I often had to sit there for 2 hours in order to get some strength to walk those 7 steps back. To crawl on the floor was not an option, that was too painful for my legs…
I can tell you, it is not comfortable at all to sit on the toilet for 2 hours….that is not a choice…
And when I was finally back at the couch again, I had to lay down for hours, every part of my body was crashing. So no water, because then I had to use the washroom again. No food, because I was too exhausted to eat and digest food. And most of the time even no sleep, because my body was not able to relax.
Going to the kitchen was even more challenging, that took me 16 steps…. You may understand by now that it was even a bigger effort. There have been many days that I had to eat what was within my grasp, and close to the couch and otherwise I was hungry for the rest of the time. And if I was able to have something to eat, my body most of the time could not digest and absorb it, because my liver, my spleen, my digestive system hurt all the time and most of the food came out as diarrhea. I also developed food intolerance. The result of all of this was of course malnutrition and weight loss. I weighed only 48 kilo, while I am 1.70 meter tall… so you can say I was skinny.
And the doctor still insisted that he had no idea what was wrong with me.

It truly was very dramatic and traumatizing to live a life like this and because of that I slept most of the time, sometimes even 16 hours a day, because the pressure in my head was intolerable. Information was processed incorrectly. Sound and movement around me were very hard to cope with. It all triggered my nervous system even more.
When the pressure in my head was reaching its peak, I was completely disorientated. While I once was used to have that photographic memory, I could now hardly absorb any information. All information came in in a wrong way. It felt like my brain didn’t communicate in a proper way anymore and like the neurotransmitters didn’t function like they used to do.
Reading became impossible. It was like the letters were moving on the paper. A word of 6 letters was difficult to read. I saw the first two letters, the central two letters and the last two letters, but couldn’t see them together forming a word with any meaning. It was easier to read for me on a computer screen, but still it took lots of energy.
And then there were the issues with sound. Every sound around me was too much, so I used ear plugs 24/7. But it only helped partially. The sound of the television of my neighbors came through every evening and when they banged their front door or the door at the balcony, I had no idea where that sound came from. Was it their door or mine? Did someone enter my house? An alteration in the apartment building where I live, kept me in the same position for hours on the couch, because it wasn’t easy to move.
All those triggers of my nervous system increased the pressure in my head. Sometimes it was so bad, that I could touch my left arm with my right hand not knowing what I was doing. I could feel something was touching my left arm. I could feel I was touching something with my right hand, but the combination that it was my own right hand, holding my left arm, was not perceived in my brain.
On days like that it was also very difficult to eat something. I could watch a strawberry for example for 15 minutes, wondering if it was truly a strawberry, could I eat it or was it moldy. Was it safe to eat it? I didn’t register the correct information. And when I finally received the information, and there was an unexpected sound, my memory was erased again and I could start all over again.
On the worst days it even went one step further. I hardly recognized anything around me. Not the couch I was laying on, not the furniture, not where I was… I was continuously wondering what I was looking at, where I was… Sometimes I only recognized something by its color, or by its shape, sometimes only because of the number of steps I had taken (which I was always counting just to know where in the house I was), sometimes I didn’t register any of the information coming in. So in those moments my brain was functioning a little bit better, I put things away at certain places, just in case the pressure would increase again and I couldn’t recognize things anymore. Then at least I knew where it was.
And that is how my life was, day after day, week after week, year after year. And the doctors would only say to me: Girl we can’t find anything wrong….
Taking a shower, cleaning the house, going outside… I guess you can imagine it simply was a bridge too far.
While everybody was enjoying a day at the beach underneath my window, I was under a blanket on the couch, shivering from the cold, dreaming of what I would do if there would ever come a time when everything would be easier and I could go outside again, experience the seasons and feel the warmth of the sun on my skin.

Emotionally this condition had huge impact too. Your organs are connected to different emotions, so if your organs do not function well, it also has emotional consequences. And vice versa….
I noticed that my body didn’t purify well, my urine looked colorless like water, even after many hours without drinking, my urine was colorless. That is not a good sign… My liver hurt terribly and all the toxins were accumulating in my body, which had a huge impact on my nervous system, my brain and my skin. And of course also on my emotions, I was angry, powerless and afraid.

I sometimes could hardly bare the pain in my central nervous system (including my brain and spinal cord). The pain led to spasms. Painkillers however didn’t bring any relief. They actually only made the situation worse. The only thing that helped me at that time to reduce the pressure was crying…. Only tears brought some relief. But I couldn’t just cry. I needed an occasion.
For years I hardly was able to cry, because to feel emotions, to release emotions, resulted in a loss of energy. And when the energy was depleted it was certain that I wasn’t able to walk, to eat, to drink. So my body protected itself in various ways. The little energy that was left was saved for the vital organs, to breath, to have a heartbeat, to eat and to drink. It felt like all other things were blocked.
I was trapped in a body, with something causing havoc from the inside out. And the four walls of my apartment have been my prison for a long time.

This illness not only affected my physical, mental and emotional body. It also affected me spiritually.
I had my open spiritual channels. But at that time I wasn’t aware at all that I had spiritual channels and that they were open. I grew up with them and I thought everybody had them. I thought everybody received the same information and saw the images that I saw. Well, that was a misconception.
Only a few years ago I learned that not everybody lived with open channels. I now know it is called a “direct knowing channel and an open third eye” but back then I had no idea.
Having open spiritual channels in a situation like that was not really pleasant all the time, because I knew my health was deteriorating and the disease was progressing and also that if nothing would change, I was going to die.
I saw the darkness around me and knew where the problems were inside my body. I also saw what was going on around me.

Every night I saw unpleasant souls bothering me, keeping me awake, I heard the voices.
Many people speak about angels and light beings, but I can tell you that there also are beings with very little light, looking quite dark actually….
One night I was lying down in bed and I saw I was surrounded by those dark beings. I was terrified. I crawled under the blanket, hiding, but of course that was not helpful with an open third eye, because I kept seeing them and the blanket didn’t protect me. To my surprise I also saw a hand on my shoulder, radiating golden light. And because of that hand on my shoulder a circle of light was created. A circle in which I was safe. Those dark beings couldn’t reach me. And I felt so safe.

I didn’t completely understand it, for I couldn’t see who’s hand was on my shoulder, but I was so grateful for that hand. Every time I was scared again, I remembered this moment and it helped me to relax. Fortunately my request for not having to see this again was being fulfilled. I didn’t see them quite often anymore, but I could still feel their presence, every night….

I have lived like this for years, staring at the ceiling. I couldn’t read books. To listen to the radio was no option either. To watch television was also getting more difficult each month because it was very hard to follow conversations. I was missing most of the meaning of the sentences. Subtitling was gone before I was able to read the whole line. So the only thing I could watch in the end were cartoons. Biker Mice, Road Runner, De Fabeltjeskrant… I have watched it hundreds of times, just to have some distraction.
Also the telephone became an issue. The ringing of the phone was too much to bear, listening to conversations was too difficult. I asked the same question over and over again, because I could not remember the answer. To have visitors was even less attractive to me. I didn’t had the strength anymore to appear better than I was. And after the visitor had left, it took me days to recover.

The journey starts

There is more, but I won’t go deeper into horrible details now. I think you have read enough to realize that it hasn’t been easy to spent 7 years of my life in this way (until the end of 2010 when I met Dr. and Master Zhi Gang Sha). I realize very well, that just because you have some information about what I felt, you will not really understand how it felt, but I hope you came to the point of understanding that ME/CFS is more than just being chronically fatigued…  The fatigue is just a part of it, but not being able to do anything, being completely dependent… and waking up each day without any perspective on improvement was what hurt me the most.
I knew I had to do something, because I would not survive without any interference. It was dark inside me, it was dark all around me, pitch-black maybe even is a better description. I needed light….!

This resulted in keeping the lights on day and night. It of course wasn’t the kind of light I really needed, but it was something to hold on to in the middle of the night when I could feel the darkness and sometimes still saw the darkness, then at least I had a lightbulb to focus on. I still keep a little light on during the night, so it won’t be completely dark when I need to go to the washroom in the middle of the night.

People speak about Heaven on Mother Earth.. well, I lived more in a place like Hell on Mother Earth.
I needed to find a way out, because living with ME in the way I just described for the next decade was not possible for me. And so I started my journey to the light. To find light at the end of the darkness. A journey that led me to an incredible turn in my life and I am still so unbelievably grateful for that, so immensely grateful.
Going back now to those times and writing all of this down makes me even more aware of the difference between then and now and makes me even more grateful. I never want to go back to that time again, those days, those weeks, those months, those years…. never again....

In the next episodes I will share more of this turn in my life, but first I will give you in part 3 more insights of the consequences of this illness: isolation.

With love and light, Barbara
